Throughout the history of the nation of Israel, three offices provided leadership. The prophet revealed God’s word. The priest served to facilitate access to the presence of God. The king facilitated military and civil leadership. Lamentations 4 documents the downward slide of leadership in all three offices. Judah must face this reality and mourn.
