The Good Shepherd

Psalm 23:6

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.   Today’s sermon notes will be very abbreviated due to our VBS that has been happening all week long (we’ll talk about it more in a moment). This morning I want to bring up three points that David points out as he closes out the 23rd Psalm.   God’s goodness and mercy pursue us. - Psalms 23:6   David was just like us in the way that he pursued many things he thought would make him happy. Many of those things led to his downfall and negatively impacted his family for generations. As David reflects upon his life he sees that God has continually pursued him with goodness and mercy no matter where he was in life.  We experience the same thing David did, even as we pursue things we think are important in our lives. We see that God does the same thing by pursuing us because we are important to Him.   “And” is a transition we will all face. - Psalms 23:6   The “and” that David uses here in the 6th verse is a very telling one because it’s a phrase that everyone who lives will experience (barring the second coming of Jesus) - the transition from this life to the next.  It’s not something that is fun to talk about, but it’s a truth in all our lives. Why are we talking about it in the context of the 23rd Psalm?  It’s because the time before this “and” in our lives is the only time we can turn and accept God’s goodness and mercy in our lives.  Jesus came to seek and save the lost, He’s seeking you too.   Eternal life is found in the Good Shepherd alone. - Psalms 23:6   Jesus is Lord of all, but you can’t experience Him as the Good Shepherd unless He is YOUR Lord.  Just like David said in the first verse of Psalms 23 “The Lord is MY shepherd”, you must be able to say that as well.  How does this happen?  Well, let me take you down the Crimson Brick Road that we took our children down this week at VBS.
  1. You have to understand you are a sinner.
Romans 3:23  For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
  1. You have to understand your need for a personal savior.
Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
  1. You have to understand that only Jesus saves.
Romans 8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
  1. You have to understand that Jesus died for us.
Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
  1. You have to understand that you must make Jesus the Lord of your life.
Romans 10:9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.   This is the only way you can experience God as the Good Shepherd. You can only experience Him as the Good Shepherd and Savior through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
