What is Church? Sharing Christ

Ephesians 6:19-20

The church is to Gather Worshipers, Grow Disciples, Serve Others, and Share Christ.

19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Paul asks for prayer for himself, that he will “make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.” He is asking for prayer that he would have opportunities to proclaim the gospel and the boldness to make it plain. Every Christian is in the ministry, but missionaries, pastors, and other Christian leaders are especially targets for the enemy. If Satan can bring down a leader, he scores big time!

When you read through the Book of Acts, you don’t get the impression that Paul was lacking in boldness. In fact, he was in prison, because he had boldly proclaimed the gospel to a mob that had attempted to kill him.

Paul was not a strong, naturally gifted communicator. The Corinthians had said of him, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech is contemptible”. He says that he was with them “in weakness and in fear and in much trembling.”  He knew that he was inadequate in himself, so he needed prayer for boldness.

Pray for each other to be fearless and uncompromising when it comes to sharing the gospel. Pray for me! Spurgeon was once asked the secret of his great success. He simply replied, “My people pray for me.”

It’s amazing that Paul did not ask for prayer that he would be released from prison, or for prayer for his health needs. Rather, he asked for prayer that he would proclaim the gospel boldly and not miss any opportunities.

The angel not only delivers the apostles from prison in the new church in Acts but also encourages them by giving a fresh commission. “Go stand in the temple courts.”  In instances of threat and danger in Acts, the key word from God concerns boldness in sharing Christ.

They are accused of disobeying the orders to stop teaching, and of making the Jewish hierarchy guilty of this man’s blood. They are willing to die rather than disobey the Lord.

When the apostles are rearrested and asked to explain their actions, they use the opportunity to proclaim the message, not try to secure a release.

Never stop sharing the good news that is Jesus Christ.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.  42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. Acts 5:41-42.

We have a message so important that it simply must be shared to all who live on earth. God’s salvation in Christ is the answer of the Creator of the world to its basic problems. We know the amazing mystery of the gospel. If it is that urgent, then every human being should be told this good news.

We must always look at life with evangelistic eyes and be incessantly involved in evangelism. The commission of the church is to share the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
